About Vancouver 2011

All Aboard: Collaboration for Change

Over 150 experts and players from the global maritime sector gathered in Vancouver from 12 - 14 October to discuss how improving collaboration between those involved in the world's oceans is the key to a sustainable maritime sector.

Those involved in the industry have seen the conference evolve as issues of climate change have increasingly come to the fore, placing increasing pressure on the sector to reduce its carbon footprint.

In its sixth year, the Sustainable Shipping Conference focused on some of the key challenges facing the global supply chain. These include the North American Emission Control Area (ECA), the future development of the Arctic, marine spatial planning, the role of technologies and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

Over 30 speakers focused on how collaboration can provide an advantageous and positive experience in meeting impending regulations within the industry.

Speakers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Royal Roads University presented the latest data on future ECAs, and delegates got to hear from World Fuel Services about how the bunker players are supplying a market where ships are compelled to burn distillates.

Delegates also heard the latest information on the future of the Arctic, with speakers focusing on the realities of shipping in the area as trade routes open.

New for 2011, two complimentary workshops ran parallel to the main conference programme, exploring potential partnership opportunities across the transportation and technology sector.

Both focus groups encouraged organisations to meet and discuss a more collaborative approach in reducing barriers for increased efficiency across the industry.
