Sustainable Shipping Poll

What do you think is the most promising technology available to ships to reduce emissions?

Over the past few years the shipping industry has been overawed with new technologies that claim to help reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

In September leading shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) said that existing technology could cut shipping emissions by 50%.

Among the many technologies, the four that have featured quite prominently during 2009 have been clean fuels, scrubbing technology, engine modifications and fuels cells.

The subject of whether scrubbers is a viable alternative to low sulphur bunker fuel has faced a lot of debate (link).

Scrubbing technology, which is said to remove SOx and PM, came to the fore after it received endorsement by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an alternative to using low sulphur fuel to meet regulatory limits.

Fuel cell technology
on the other hand is still in its infancy. A fuel cell is a power source that chemically combines natural gases such as hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity.

It is said to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, improve energy efficiency and produce zero emissions of harmful substances, when compared to conventional engine technology, according to Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

Engine modifications have also featured prominently with many engines already meeting the 2011 NOx emissions standards.

Wärtsilä is among those companies that have said they can deliver an entire propulsion control system, which Wärtsilä claims can contribute to considerable savings in fuel consumption, in turn reducing emissions.

So-called clean fuels are also being proposed to help reduce ship emissions. Liquid natural gas (LNG) contains no sulphur and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and CO2 are also reduced. A number of companies are proposing greater use of LNG.

Biofuels are another potential clean fuel, although there is much variability depending on the feedstock that is used for the fuel. Tests are already underway with several different types and blends.

There is one technology that has been overlooked, able to create complete combustion in all liquid combustible fuel, especially diesel fuel. The formulation took over 10 years to be completed, followed with over 12 years and 302 miilions miles of documented tests and scientific research by the top 2 independent laboratories in the United States. The technology was a Noble Prize in 1951, and originated from NASA from the solid fuel rocket motor program as a burn-rate accelerator. As always, the one that really "works" are the one that no one stopped to study due to not meeting the status quo. In fact, this technology is considered "Transformational Technology" because it disrupts the status quo. Learn more about this technology at this website: http://www.mxmproducts.com. We have the solution to meet 2050 emission standards with this technology. We have ears and cannot hear, have eyes and cannot see. Make a difference by taking an action. IT WORKS. LM

Larry, you are wasting your time (now) promoting a fuel technology to the shipping industry, as the Cop 15 summit has collapsed, and their is no big stick to make the shipping industry reduce their emissions, and without it (as proven by the IMO over the last 12 years) no ship owner will spend one penny more than it has to on fuel or emission saving, as he/she does not pay for the fuel, and the charterer will certainly not pay for a fuel/emission technology, as it is not his engine/generator in the 1st place, and he will not chance it just in case the engine breaks down, and you can bet your bottom dollar it will be the fuel technology that will get the blame. We have tried promoting our technology to the shipping industry as well, and have carried out surveys for the ship owners and charterers, gauanteeing a 15% fuel saving and a gauanteed 30% emissions savings, on a save and pay payment terms, but no takers.

Ok, lets forget about globing warming and assume the earths atmosphere is not being effected by mans energy needs, lets go down the road or river or ocean to (reduce fossil fuel consumption) with new technologies purely on the bases of what man is only really interested in (money). and if mans energy needs are effecting the earths atmosphere (confirmation within the next 10 years) then the shipping industry will be in a great position as they will have to build ships to house a few million displaced people as their little Islands (manhattan) will be no longer (except for the penthouse) where the shipping owners will be anyway. .

Hi guys I have managed to secure a trial with a major cruise line with our mXt9 product, which has already been trialled with RCL : http://www.tkfuels.com.au/Content_Common... So it is doable.
